HEBREWS 10:31 “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God.”
“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”
— Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the LORD is one of the most foundational — and most neglected — doctrines in all of Scripture. In modern culture, it’s often reduced to mere “respect” or ignored altogether. But the Bible speaks with thunder: the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). It is the first step to discernment, spiritual maturity, and righteous living.
To fear the LORD is to recognize His holiness, tremble at His justice, and submit to His authority. It is to depart from evil, because we know God sees and judges all. It is the gateway to wisdom, because no man can be wise until he knows how small, sinful, and short-lived he truly is before a holy God.
I. The Fear of the LORD is the Beginning of Wisdom
- Proverbs 9:10 – The fear of the LORD comes before wisdom. It is the foundation. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
- Proverbs 2:3–6 – We grow in wisdom only after we first fear the LORD and seek understanding. “3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.”
- Philippians 2:12 – “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” This is not about earning salvation, but introspection to be sure that you are saved and it involves the Fear of the Lord, without which you can not have assurance.
- Job 28:28 – “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.” Are you an adulterer or adulteress, a thief, a liar, a deceiver or anything else contrary to God, depart from it, right now, this second. Repent, change, do not serve the father of lies.
You cannot grow in wisdom unless you first humble yourself in godly fear.
II. The Contrast: The Fool and the God-Fearer
- Proverbs 1:29–31 – “Those who did not choose the fear of the LORD are destroyed by their own way. For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.”
- Psalm 14:1 – “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.” He lives as though God does not see his or her transgression against God’s perfect moral law. Gods law is perfect. Meats, drinks, days and ordinances were done away with. The moral law remains intact, Jesus did not come to destroy the law but fulfill it.
- Psalm 36:1–2 – “There is no fear of God before his eyes… he flattereth himself in his own eyes.” Welcome to self love, self exaltation, the narcicistic craving for worship and admiration, this is contrary to God. Know you not that the meek shall inherit the kingdom of God, and let him that glories, glory in the Lord.
- Proverbs 14:12 – “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” People follow “good” feelings, lust, “fun times” They find joy in deception, fornication, their greed and covetousness lead to theft, they feed this with wine which is a mocker and pursue hedonistic emotions and pleasures instead of choosing to find joy and pleasure in the things God has approved, such as marriage, charity, mercy and kindness, in fellow Believers and little ones. These people are in a hurry to die because the wages of sin are death and God is angry with the wicked every day. Those who hate God love death. Jesus is the Word made flesh. Do you love the word or is it the god of this world (the devil) whom you really are worshiping. He is subtle he will tell you God exists to please you and he will lead you into fornication, adultery covetousness, lust, betrayal and every other thing contrary to Jesus Christ, the Word of God.
The fool rejects the fear of the LORD because he believes God does not see — but judgment will come suddenly.
III. The Terror of the LORD: Judgment on the Wicked
“Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer… For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD… Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way… For the turning away of the simple shall slay them.”
— Proverbs 1:28–32
This should terrify those that do not choose the fear of the Lord. When their calamity comes it will be without remedy and wisdom will not be there to help, they will call on God but he will not answer.
- Proverbs 1:27 – “When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind.”
- Isaiah 66:4 – “I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.” Be warned. When you harden your heart against God, when you call good that which he has called evil. He will abandon that wicked person and they will not even be able to find salvation.
- 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 – 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:12That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
- Isaiah 8:13 – “Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.”
To the unbeliever, the fear of the LORD becomes terror in judgment — especially for those who oppress or persecute the righteous.
IV. The Fear of the LORD: Loving Good, Hating Evil
- Proverbs 8:13 – “To fear the LORD is to hate evil.” Evil is that which God hates. Do you hate these things? If not then you do not have the Fear of the Lord and you are are not wise but a fool.
Proverbs 6:16-19 – “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” The term “abomination” in the Bible refers to something that is detestable or loathsome in God’s eyes, and it’s frequently used to describe severe violations of His commandments and principles. So, when something is called an abomination, it’s an strong indication that God hates it. This concept aligns with the idea that what God calls abominable is inherently something He hates.
Malachi 2:16 – “For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away…” (referring to divorce).
Zechariah 8:17 – “And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.” (false promises, covenant breakers- such as the marriage covenant)
Isaiah 61:8 – “For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering…”
Jeremiah 44:4 – “Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.” (Referring to idolatry.)
Amos 5:21 – “I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.” (Addressing empty religious rituals without genuine righteousness.)
Proverbs 12:22 – “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.” God hates lies. All of Satan’s children that claim Jesus but worship the devil in their heart are liars because the devil is father of lies. Believers must strive to check themself by loving truth and hating lies. This can be a back slidden or weak Christian but deception or telling a lie is also the first thing you will usually notice when you encounter one of the devils own children.
Revelation 2:6 – “But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.” (Referring to false teachings or practices.)
Jeremiah 3:8 – “And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.” Here, God uses the metaphor of adultery to describe Israel’s unfaithfulness, indicating how deeply He detests such betrayal.
Ezekiel 22:11 – “”And one hath committed abomination with his neighbour’s wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.”
This passage shows that adultery, along with other sexual sins, is considered an abomination before God.
- Romans 12:9 – “Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.” Again HATE Evil, LOVE good according to how God defines them in his holy word and not what seems right in your own eyes. Chose the Fear of the Lord and not the lust of your own selfish heart. Trust him.
- Psalm 97:10 – “Ye that love the LORD, hate evil.” If you love the Lord, you hate evil. Do you hate what God hates? Are you born again and indwelled with the holy spirit? This will lead to a hatred for sin and thus a love for God. Many people worship God (the god of this world) and many people are lead by a spirit, but that spirit is an unclean thing that is familier to you. It resists blame and justifes your wickedness. The only way to cast it out is to take the blame of your sins, to hate the evil that you have done and even thought, confess to the Lord your wickedness, call on the name of the Lord believing that he will make you a new creation. God I put all my hope faith and trust on the finished work of Jesus Christ. There is nothing I can do to add or take away from it. Than you will be saved and indwelled by the Holy Spirit, you will be a new creature, the inward man/woman, the true self riding around in sinful flesh. More on that elsewhere.
- Hebrews 5:14 – Spiritual maturity involves discerning between good and evil. The Holy spirit is calling you to grow up baby Christian. The apostle Paul and the Word of God is calling you to be more than a spiritual child. How? Through discernment? What does that mean? “But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Thats right, by recognizing what is good and what is evil, that is what this oft thrown erroneously around word means. Discernment is to discern between good and evil, the Fear of the Lord is to HATE evil. This is the will of God. Therefore, if family or friends or anyone lies, commits adultery or do anything else that is evil, you will recognize it for the evil that it is and you will hate it. You will not continue in a relationship with such a wicked person until they repent.
- 1 Corinthians 5:11-14 – 11But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. 12For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? 13But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person. Either way you hate the evil, but if they are the lost, you can talk to them, for Gods purpose but if they claim to be a believer you are to cut ties with them completely until they repent, after you have confronted them about the evil they are doing. And to be clear, adultery is a type of fornication. All sex outside the bounds is fornication. Adultery is fornication and all verses about fornication are applicable to adultery, because an adulterer and adulterous are fornicators that also defile and break the holy marriage covenant and harm more than just their own souls. This is why the 7th commandment is the cornerstone of family law in the Word of God, much like the 8th is the cornerstone of property law. Additionally you can not violate any commandment 3 through ten without also violating the first or second.
The fear of the LORD leads to discernment, protection, and love. Evil destroys. Good heals.
V. Living in the Fear of the LORD: A Daily Walk
- Proverbs 16:6 – “By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.”
- Malachi 3:18 – Those who fear the LORD discern between the righteous and the wicked.
- Proverbs 3:5–6 – “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart… and he shall direct thy paths.”
- Romans 1:28-32 –
28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
LET Me BREAK DOWN the WIKED REPROBATE
28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind (a rejected mind without discernment), to do those things which are not convenient (not beneficial, not natural);
2 Being filled with all unrighteousness (Iniquity, living in sin), fornication (this includes adultery, homosexuality and any other sex act outside the marital covenant), wickedness (Evil, harming others with indifference or malice), covetousness (I never knew lust except the Lord said thou shalt not covet; sexual desire outside of mariage and greed, wanting what others have without contentment), maliciousness (Being cruel, enjoying the suffering of another especially when you deliberatly caused, consented or contributed to it); full of envy (an ungodly desire to desire to be exalted over others, bitterness at their blessings, in your heart because you think you deserve your wicked hearts desire”, murder (this includes trying to drive another to commit suicide by so thorougly destroying their life. The devil is the destroyer and he comes to kill steal and destroy), debate (not inherently evil but still, the wicked love to argue because they enjoy the frustration and strife they cause when they deflect, project, gas light and triangulate), deceit (They are liars, guilt trippers, perpetual victims and manipulators), malignity (pernicious, intending evil, if you are unclear on what evil is at this point pray and reread the blog; whisperers (They love secrets, Bread eaten in secret is sweet, they gossip, they lie, they manipulate)
30Backbiters (This literally means to talk shit about people behind their backs! smear campaign), haters of God (You can’t hate God if you don’t believe in his existance, the fool has said in his heart that there is no God, but rather it is talking about those wolves in sheeps clothing that proclaim they are Christian but they in their heart hate God, you can spot this when they reject the word in whole or in part because it rebukes them or does not serve their own selfish desires), despiteful (evil hatred, scorn and anger, toward the righteous, and those they are hurting) proud (Thinking to highly of ones self), boasters (Tooting their own horn, talking about how special or beautiful and what they feel they deserve), inventors of evil things (they come up with evil ideas and perverted acts, they come up with ways to harm others and insert themselves into other peoples situations. this might never be noticed), disobedient to parents (these people will not come under godly authority, they disregard first their parents then their husbands if a wife, a boss if a husband, a godly pastor, they disregard the civil laws breaking them whenever they choose, and above all they do the same with God, walking in disobedience. “If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15”)
31Without understanding (Understanding is knowledge of the Holy, they do not posess this knowledge and thus fall into to heresy very easily) covenantbreakers,(They are promise breakers, their word is unreliable, when married they will break the marriage covenent through adultery or divorce, usually both.) without natural affection (Natural affection is a mother and father’s love for their children, a wife’s reverence and love for her husband and a desire to help him, a husband’s love and desire to know his wife and to be ready to protect her at the cost of his own life, it is empathy for others and every familial relationship and hoping the best for your friends,) implacable (Relentless, impossible to make happy or appease, nothing you do is right or enough for these people), unmerciful (Oh they expect nothing but mercy and instant forgivness of the evil they did to you and never truly repented of but you, when they come against you they have no mercy, they will destroy your life as far as they are capable, your children your relationship, your property, your reputation, your job, your very life and soul if they can, especially if they can get away with it, they enjoy you’re suffering while pretending to be be indifferent to it, they will not let up for mery’s sake but only if it is a benefit to them, they are unmerciful, they will rub your nose in it they will take everything they can, they will flaunt before you even as they tell the world they are a good person):
32Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
✝️ Conclusion: Choose the Fear of the LORD
You may have noticed a similaerity between what the world calls malignant or malevolant narcicism (whether Overt or Covert). These people at their worse are reprobate haters of God as demonstrated by their hatred for God’s people. They have been given a strong delusion. They believe lies. Cursed children. I do not know if they can even be saved. The option is available if they humble themselves and accept the blame and the shame for the things they have done (probably publicly), deliberately manipulating, hurting others and telling countless lies, but this is antithetical to their character, if there is any chance, they would have to be beautifully, almost completely broken by God, then put their faith and trust on Jesus Christ. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. If I ever see it happen I will write about it, seems impossible however.
Just remember Christian, the devil goes after believers, you will probably have to deal with this. Paul was given a lot of light but he also had a thorn in his side. That thorn was the messenger of Satan to buffet him. This messenger put in your life, will reqruit others and together they will rail at you, spewing doubt and pointing out every sin you have ever committed, turning smaller transgressions into major ones, never taking accountability for themselves, portraying themselves as saint or victim and you as the monster they really are. Don’t listen to the devil speaking through those that you have loved. Recognize it and turn again to the Word of Truth.
The fear of the LORD is not bondage, it is the beginning of real wisdom. It is how we love God and love our neighbor — by turning away from the evil that destroys lives and clinging to the good that brings life according to Gods standard as is written in his word and not the standard of this world or the deceitful heart of the natural man.
“Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.”
